Description

This will be the first in a series of tessellation classes hosted by our Vice President, Catherine O’Mary. During this class we will be focusing on the construction of an isometric (60 degree) grid, via folding. We will build up to the tessellation pictured over the series of a few classes. The difficulty of the classes can be customized to the skill level of the folder by selection of the grid level and paper size.

Tessellations are a particular class of origami which focuses on repeatable patterns, typically lying on a grid, that lie flat to create beautiful geometric patterns, especially when backlit. The gridding process is essential for any tessellation lying on an isometric grid (which is the most common). Since there is time between each part of this class, folders interested in doing a higher grid size will have the time to work on this between classes. Additionally, these meetings will be recorded, to serve as a resource in the future.

Attached is an image of the tessellation, designed by Catherine, that we will be building up to over these classes. Do not be intimidated by the intricacy – the classes are designed to be accessible to beginners, who may want to work on a small grid, and challenging for more skilled folders, who have the opportunity to work on a higher grid size, or smaller sheet.

Kami does work for this model, and it can even be completed with printer paper if you don’t have access to anything better. Glassine or kite paper is the ideal option.

Of course we will have the typical array of announcements, discussion, show-and-tell. Feel free to bring questions and friends, these meetings are open to the public.
