Rosebud/Tulip - A simple warmup model using a traditional base
Spiral Daisy - One of the staple designs in my spiral flower series. It is completely stable and self-locking, with no extra prep required! This was designed for my sister's wedding. The pattern can be emulated with pentagons, hexagons, etc., but I will teach from a 6" square of kami

Box-O and Cube Friend are designs I created experimenting with making creatures based on geometric shapes. The core shapes for them are a rectangular prism and a cube. A well-known challenge in origami design is creating single-sheet 3D shapes, and normally a lot of paper is hidden to lock them together, but here it gets used for things like arms and legs that bring the shapes alive. While they are very cute, the mix of delicate 3D shapes and more traditional flat limbs requires some care and skill to fold well. Students should be able to fold at least at a high intermediate level, and be prepared to fold crisp and accurate creases.

Do you ever feel constrained by the limited color options offered by traditional origami paper packs? In this class, you'll learn how to paint sections of origami paper for beautiful visual effects & gradients. In class, we'll be working with a variation of sonobe units, but techniques can be applied to any modular design. If you'd like to make a larger model (30 units or more), you might want to come to class with units pre-folded. We'll be doing 6 or 12 unit models in class.

Supplies:

White or black origami paper (or a color you'd like to contrast) cut into 7.5cm squares. Please be sure to bring as many papers as units you'd like to make (cube: 6 units, octahedron: 12 units, icosahedron: 30 units

This models is designed based on the traditional model called rose/camellia.
In the beginning of the class, we will practice folding the rose/camellia then fold the brooch.
By adding the small pieces of washi paper, you can design your own appealing brooch

More modular madness from Kate! This 30-piece model was a hit at PCOC 2015 in Boulder. If you didn’t go, now is your chance to learn this tantalizing fold from Kate. Each facet of the model is comprised of a crystal-like form, hence its name. The modules are not difficult but precision folding will help in the tricky assembly.

The dreidel spins best from heavier paper like astrobright or scrapbooking paper. The dreidel spins best from smaller paper like these sizes:( 4 1/4 " squares) or note cube (3 1/4 "), 6" works too but paper like scrapbook, not kami. Kami is pretty but too flimsy. Larger paper doesn't spin well I tried 12" and 8 1/2".
Needed: 3 squares plus 1 square cut to 1/4 size for the handle and a skewer to roll the handle.

Mountain Aven, designed May 2022 is folded from a single uncut square. It is an evergreen shrub with eight petaled white flowers and has a yellow center. It grows in the Arctic and Alpine regions in large colonies.

This is a lovely vase folded from a octagon.

Supplies:

To fold vase:
An octagon from 25/30 cm square of rigid paper (80-100 g/m2) (Elephant hide, efalin or stardream papers are perfect).
Optional: a scoring tool and a ruler, a few clips

For backcoating:
A square of tissue paper in a color that matches well with the color of the octagon (at least 5 cm bigger than the octagon); glue stick

This is a very expressive model, with lots of room for shaping to make each one unique. It is deceptively simple, but has a few complex collapses and fine shaping techniques that make it a very fun fold.

Supplies:

Paper Reqs: 30cm or larger thin tissue foil, or another strong thin paper that holds its shape. Kami is doable but shaping is tricky, and it tears very easily in this model. Foil is another good choice, as long as it's relatively thin, since there are lots of layers.

This origami eagle is folded from a rectangular piece of paper with the same aspects as A4 copy paper.
You can fold this model from copy paper but if you prefer to use your favorite origami paper, I can show you how to cut a large square paper (35 cm) into a rectangular shape.

Cherry Blossom Box

I have always enjoyed folding boxes, and consequently you can clearly see the influence of Tomoko Fuse in this box, but I was intrigued by the idea of trying to get a petal fold on the top. It then occurred to me that a 5-sided box with the petal fold might look a bit like a cherry blossom, so I worked on that and was reasonably successful (I think!) PDF diagrams will be posted after the live event.

Supplies:

Paper size: anywhere from 75mm (3") to 150mm (6"). 150mm is a little large. 75mm looks great, but maybe not for the first attempt.
Paper type: Ordinary kami is fine, but slightly heavier would be better, especially for paper > 100mm square.
