Opening Remarks:
Jean Baden-Gillette (President) opened the meeting at 5:30pm,
welcomed the attending members of OrigamiUSA and explained
the outline of the meeting. She stated that the first order of
business would be to vote for the election of the Board of
Directors at which time Jean turned the meeting over to Michael
Naughton who managed the 2002 election.
Voting Process:
Mr. Naughton proceeded to describe the outline of the election
process. He asked that whoever did not vote by mail and who
required a ballot to raise their hand and one would be given to
them. After the ballots were distributed, Mr. Naughton
officially called for the vote. Votes were collected and he
closed the vote. Mr. Naughton said he would return to announce
the election results.
Introductions, Awards and Speeches:
Jean Baden-Gillette introduced Jan Polish who proceeded to talk
about the Ranana Benjamin Award. She outlined the purpose for
the establishment of the award as well as the details involved in
the selection process. Jan Polish introduced David Benjamin who
thanked OrigamiUSA for its involvement and assistance in the
establishment of the award. Mr. Benjamin noted that his father
was unable to attend and then introduced the members of his
family who were present. Mr. Benjamin read from a speech
prepared by his father who also expressed his gratitude to
OrigamiUSA for the establishment of the award in the name of
Ranana J. Benjamin.
Jan Polish introduced Rachel Katz, Chairman of the Ranana
Benjamin Award Committee. Ms. Katz talked about Ranana Benjamin
and how she dedicated her life to the mission of spreading the
joy and teaching of origami to others. She said that the
Benjamin Family had donated a book written by Ranana Benjamin to
be sold by The Origami Source and that the proceeds would benefit
the Ranana Benjamin Award Fund.
With great pleasure, Ms. Katz introduced Laura Kruskal as the
first winner of the Ranana Benjamin Award. Ms. Kruskal took the
stage and thanked everyone for the award and talked about her
experiences and life as it pertains to the teaching of origami.
Jean Baden-Gillette said that she would like to introduce each
member of the board, who in turn, would briefly talk about their
roles and responsibilities as members of the board. Jean
introduced Jan Polish, Treasurer of OrigamiUSA.
Treasurer's Report:
Jan Polish reviewed in detail the Annual Report for 2001. She
noted that it was a somewhat unpleasant report because: funds
were depleted as a result of the lawsuit against the
organization. of the lack of FIT housing at Convention 2001
which negatively impacted on attendance. the organization now
had the on-going expense of a full-time paid Administrator.
Jan Polish reported on the projected 2002 financial position of
the organization as compared with 2001 which she expressed to be
a much brighter picture for the following reasons: that outside
projects have contributed a great deal of money. that membership
has increased by several hundred members. that attendance at
Convention 2002 increased as compared to 2001. that sales of
Sorry Kits were much higher this year than in 2001.
Jan Polish thanked Kathleen O'Regan for developing and designing
the logo for Convention 2002 as it appears on the t-shirt,
sweatshirt, button and Annual Collection 2002.
Corporate Secretary's Report:
June Sakamoto introduced herself as the Corporate Secretary to
the Board of Directors. She then proceeded to introduce Satoshi
Kamiya and Ushio Ikegami and presented them both with a t-shirt
and sweatshirt for all the work they have performed on behalf of
OrigamiUSA on a volunteer basis. Both Satoshi and Ushio thanked
everyone and accepted their gifts. June Sakamoto also introduced
and thanked Mr. Makoto Yamaguchi for allowing us the opportunity
to work with both Satoshi and Ushio.
June proceeded to talk about the art exhibition held at the
National Arts Club in 2001 and how well it was received by the
public. She discussed the need for the organization to develop a
collection of quality origami models to be distributed at events
such as the National Arts Club. She called upon the members of
OrigamiUSA to donate exhibit quality models that would become a
part of a permanent collection for exhibition purposes.
June talked about the floral theme for the 2002 Origami Holiday
Tree at the American Museum of Natural History and for the need
for floral donations from the membership.
Local Vice President:
Tony Cheng talked about the income generated from The Origami
Source and thanked Phyliss Meth for all her work to ensure the
continued success of the business. He thanked everyone present
for creating the "experience of convention" and asked everyone to
stand once their area(s) of responsibility were named. Once Tony
Cheng had completed this list, it was noted that nearly everyone
in the room was standing which showed the level of contributions
made by everyone to make Convention 2002 a success.
Remote Vice President:
V'Ann Cornelius talked about the upcoming exhibit at the Japanese
Gardens in San Diego, California and she thanked Lori Gregory for
all her work with the Regional Groups.
Board Members:
Tom Hull introduced himself and proceeded to talk about the 3rd
International Meeting of Science, Math and Education. He
announced that the proceedings from this meeting were being
published and should be available sometime in July 2002. He
thanked everyone who contributed to the book, specifically naming
V'Ann Cornelius, Robert Lang and Florence Temko.
Wendy Zeichner introduced herself and talked about the number of
cranes OrigamiUSA received as a result of 9/11. She said that
suggestions were welcome on how best to use these cranes with
9/11 in mind.
VOTING RESULTS:
Michael Naughton returned to the meeting and announced that he
was ready to report on the results of the election. He reported
that 360 votes were received and counted and that 22 were invalid
because:
* they were postmarked too late
* they had no postmark
* they were received after the deadline
* the same person voted for too many candidates
* the person voting was not a current member of OrigamiUSA
* a family member made multiple votes
Michael Naughton reported that:
Class A - Local (with 4 seats up for election and 5 candidates)

Wendy Zeichner 270 votes
Mary Ann Scheblein-Dawson 228 votes

It was announced that four candidates were elected to the
board in the Class A - Local category with the exception
of Daniel Stillman.
Class A - Remote (with 2 seats up for election with 2 candidates)

It was announced that both Tom Hull and deg farrelly for
elected in the Class A - Remote Category to the board.
Class B - Remote (with 1 seat up for election with 1 candidate)
Robert Lang 316
It was announced that Robert Lang was elected to the board in the
Class B - Remote category.
Jean Baden-Gillette thanked Michael Naughton for his management
of the election process.
Jean Baden-Gillette introduced Mary Ann Scheblein-Dawson and
Robert Lang as newly elected members of the board to the
membership.
Jean Baden-Gillette introduced Tony Cheng as the new Acting
President. Tony Cheng proceeded to talk about all the
contributions made by Jean Baden-Gillette during her many years
of service on the board since 1984 and for her leadership as
President since 1993. Jean Baden-Gillette thanked everyone and
gave a speech about what it has meant to her to serve on the
board of OrigamiUSA.
Jan Polish presented Jean Baden-Gillette with the Michael Shall
Volunteer Recognition Award.
Tony Cheng also thanked Steve Buck for his service as a member of
the board.
Call for Any New Business/Questions:
Tony Cheng asked if anyone had any new business, questions or
comments.
Adjournment:
Since there were no new business, questions or comments raised,
the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors was adjourned at
