As part of NASA's effort to search for life and habitable worlds amongst the stars, a large origami inspired starshade will be sent to space to block a star's brilliant light long enough for a space telescope to image the star's exoplanetary system for the first time. Come hear the story of how the starshade's crease pattern was designed to allow the starshade to create a perfect light seal with its truss throughout deployment while being able to fold to a small well defined volume for transport. Topics such as folding from conical sheets, designing curved folds, folding from composite laminates, and accommodating for thickness in origami design will be introduced as they pertain to the starshade's crease pattern development. The second period of the class will be used to teach how to fold the origami starshade from paper. Printed crease patterns will be supplied. Printer paper folds well for this design because the paper thickness is nearly proportional to the starshade's thickness at full scale.
