The students will learn to fold a box pleated ornamental figure resembling a fancy star, suitable as a Christmas tree decoration for example. It is based on a 16x16 grid. The design includes a couple of moves which, while not especially difficult in theory, require assembling various creases at the same time. Because of these unusual steps, I am scheduling the class for two periods; if we have time left over, we can look at some variations on the design. I recommend using foil paper of at least 6"x6" for the first try; non-metallic paper with a radial color gradients also works well. The finished model cannot be folded flat without partially unfolding it, so I recommend having a suitable container on hand.
