Origami Connect - Past Events

The buzz about the next Origami Connect is true – there will be bees! An intermediate level model will be taught, along with a simpler take on the subject. Time permitting, a flower might be thrown in for good measure. All models will be taught by Marc Kirschenbaum, the origami wiz who designed these cute pieces. Typical of origami experts, Marc has authored many books, has been showcased in multiple exhibitions, and has even had a few private shows in his hometown in NYC. The fun in origami is in the folding - Marc likes to set his work apart by having interesting and engaging sequences. These bees are no exception, and have the added feature of being flat for use as a card decoration.

Magician, memory expert and origami master Benjamin Levy combines three talents in one very special session: Learn a magic trick you can perform, which you will fold, enhanced by his mnemonic tricks...

This session received rave reviews at prior conventions (OUSA and Columbus) and the trick is similar to one Benjamin uses in his performances everywhere from corporate events to the White House.

1. Six different-colored 3 ½” squares of memo-cube paper. Benjamin will use:

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Pink

2. One 5 ¼” square of black/charcoal, heavy (60 lb.ish) paper for lid. Benjamin uses Strathmore Art paper - it is solid colored but has a mottled texture that gives the paper a little life and depth.

3. One 9” square of the same paper for the box proper

An earlier version of Laura Kruskal's Super-Duper Collapsible Gift Box was a hit at the 2016 OrigamiUSA convention. Laura has continued to improve the model and its spin-offs. This is the result -- perfect for holiday surprises!

At 93, Laura Kruskal has been passionate about origami for 7 decades, even before her beloved mother-in-law, Lillian Oppenheimer, founded OrigamiUSA (then the Origami Center of America).

This edition of OrigamiConnect gives you a chance to learn 5 of her original models and to see Laura's internationally acclaimed teaching methods in action. Along the way, you will get a sneak-peek at her home, a veritable museum of origami.

Joining Laura is Karen Reeds, a longtime folder, creator, and teacher. For more than ten years, Karen and Laura have led the monthly meetings of the Princeton Public Library Origami Group.

Participants will need to pre-fold 16 sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 inch 20 or 24 lb printer paper, in at least 2 contrasting colors/patterns. A creasing tool is helpful.

On registration, participants will receive PDFs of:
1) a diagram for pre-creasing the 16 modules,
and
2) the International Origami Anthem, for printing out and folding into the Envelope.

The Super-Duper Collapsible Gift Box is an impressive cube, 5 1/2 inches on each side. It uses 16 very simple modules, folded from standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch 20 or 24 lb printer paper, in contrasting colors.
The Candy Dish uses 4 of the modules and becomes the lid or base of the Box.
The Flat Gift Box uses 8 of the modules, for a square gift box, with lid and decorative handles.
The Crown is the first, simplest, and most popular of all the Convention Crowns that Laura has created for Origami USA over the past 20+ years. It uses 4 modules. Constructing the Super-Duper Collapsible Gift Box requires 2 Crowns, so 8 modules in all.

Ben will take viewers on a tour of his studio space and go over how he frames or otherwise displays tessellations for art galleries. Afterward, he will go over some basic techniques for corrugation design.

Description: "Flower variations, following the sequence of the evolution of the creative process. We will start from the preparation of the pentagon, from a square. And we will end with ideas for arrangements, including a base made of aluminum (or other soft) wires, which will also work as a base."

Participants will need:
1 Square 6" (15 cm) Kami. Foil works well also.

Isa Klein is a prolific creator who lives in Brazil. She has a website, http://www.isaklein.com, where she shares her origami, YouTube videos and galleries of her work.

Join Uyen Nguyen and Lea Freni for a conversation about their collaboration on origami fashion. Special for this Origami Connect Event, Nguyen will teach a circular origami corrugation whose pattern is inspired by the Fibonacci Skirt for VOGEL.

Participants need:
One square of 6" (15 cm) square sheet of paper and a pair of scissors.

Uyen Nguyen has been collaborating with Lea Freni for the 2016 Spring/Summer collection of VOGEL, an emerging contemporary womenswear brand that recently debuted at Vancouver Fashion Week. The collection is embedded with the latest research in origami mechanics, based on Nguyen's own designs and research at Cornell University's Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics. Uyen is a board member of OrigamiUSA.
