This is a listing of the Special Sessions for March 24, 2024, both morning and afternoon sessions.
Family Fun - Basics
Let’s start with the basics. Missy will teach a variety of models that begin with the easy Blintz Base, as well as the traditional Masu Box. Models may include a camera, a lantern and Yakku-san (a Japanese human figure), as time permits. This class is a great opportunity for families to explore the magic of origami together. No experience is necessary. For Family Fun (beginner) classes, you must be at least 5 years old. Children between 5 and 8 must have a parent register and take the class with them. Adults unaccompanied by children are also welcome.
Swimming Fishies
No need to hold your breath. Talo will have you swimming with the current as he teaches you this easy and variable fish. Keep it simple or add extra features like eyes and extra fins. You’ll have so much fun that before you know it, you’ll have a whole school. Class is in session. Other easy fish may be taught as time permits.
Giraffe
Go on your very own safari with this stunning Giraffe by John Montroll. Let Sam guide you through his favorite model which features fun moves such as a small open sink in the head and an unusual spread along the body when constructing the front legs. You’ll need nimble fingers to thin out the legs. There are some thick layers of paper there. So get set for an adventure.
Star with Decoration
No creeps allowed in this class. Rather, it features the “decreeping” move that is the trademark of many Chris Palmer models. Daniel will patiently lead you through this fun procedure as you create this spectacular model. The technique involves opening the model slightly, reversing the direction of certain creases and collapsing the model without adding additional creases. Sounds more daunting than it is and quite satisfying once you master it.
Bird Tetrahedron Ring
Tweet, tweet, tweet! Actually, no birds are harmed or involved in this gorgeous modular creation by Kunihiko Kasahara. Instead, six tetrahedrons out of 3 Sonobe-like units are joined by simple linking units into a fantastic 3-D ring that is sure to impress. Let Alice help you capture the spirit of modular origami in this marvelous class.
Hunting Bear
You don’t have to book tickets to Alaska to see hungry bears. Instead, Donna will teach you to make your own bear catching a color-change fish...all out of one piece of paper! This model by Pasquale D’Auria features a hulking bear capturing a fish in a dynamic pose. It’s so wonderful it might make you hungry for salmon sushi for dinner.
Nine-Pointed Star
Be dazzled by this unique and unusual 9-Pointed Star. Explore the universe with Alice with this modular piece. Independently created by Tomoko Fuse and Nick Robinson, nine easy-to-fold units lock tightly into a beautiful star ring. Make a whole galaxy with your collection of fabulous, patterned paper to brighten up any room. Or use one as a package decoration for that personal touch for someone special.
