This is a listing of the Special Sessions for April 14, 2024, both morning and afternoon sessions.
Origami Basics
Also known as a Base-ics class, the traditional models taught will explore the many uses of the Preliminary, Waterbomb and Ice Cream Cone bases. This class is a great opportunity for families to explore the magic of origami together. No experience is necessary. For Family Fun (beginner) classes, you must be at least 5 years old. Children between 5 and 8 must have a parent register and take the class with them. Adults unaccompanied by children are also welcome.
KNL Dragon
Forget time-traveling back to medieval times with this modern take on a classic model. The famous compound dragon consists of a dragon body by Kunihiko Kasahara with a head by Robert Neale. This 21st century twist by Robert Lang (hence the KNL Dragon) grafts the parts into a single sheet of paper. Tally ho, no more gluing.
Hydrangea Tiles
Venture forth into the fascinating world of tessellations. This class will focus on a single Hydrangea unit by Shinzo Fujimoto which can be tessellated inside itself. Kika will also discuss how to incorporate this technique into a hydrangea tessellation. The design possibilities are nearly endless, which might lead to many sleepless nights!
Family Fun - Favorites
Wendy will teach her favorite models including some great action models that move and a happy crown that turns an ordinary day into a party! This class is a great opportunity for families to explore the magic of origami together. No experience is necessary. For Family Fun (beginner) classes you must be at least 5 years old. Children between 5 and 8 must have a parent or guardian register and take the class with them. Adults not accompanying children are also welcome!
Electra
"You made that?!” Your friends will surely exclaim when they see this amazing modular by David Mitchell. As taught by Nathan, the finished 30-piece kusudama (decorative flower ball) will feature an eye-catching 3 color weave. You don’t have to worry about juggling units during assembly, the model has one of the strongest locks ever in modular origami.
Double Bird / Crane Card
Forgot to pick up that anniversary (wedding, Valentine’s Day) card? Don’t fret; pull out some duo paper and make one yourself. Janet will teach this ingenious card by Sy Chen that puts two facing cranes front and center. Although there are some tricky and unusual squashes, the use of clear landmarks and precreases make it very satisfying to fold. Students should be comfortable with collapsing a bird base.
