Family Fun: Favorite Models
Kika will teach some of her favorite simple models which is a wonderful way to learn some origami basics and have some fun! This class is a great opportunity for families to explore the magic of origami together. No experience is necessary. For Family Fun (beginner) classes you must be at least 5 years old. Children between 5 and 8 must have a parent or guardian register and take the class with them. Adults not accompanying children are also welcome! These are some of our best-loved models to teach at OrigamiUSA public events.
Traditional Models
If you’re ever on a plane or train or bus, origami is a great way to break the ice with your fellow travellers (I recently handed out flapping birds on a train trip). Every folder should have a repertory of easy models that they can fold quickly or even teach. Sang will show you some traditional models that are easy to remember including the waterbomb, crane, flapping bird, jumping frog and a flower. Long trips don’t have to be boring.
Horse
Celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Horse with this marvelous model by Jason Schneider. This year it signifies a rapid period of movement, freedom, ambition and significant change. This is a 2-piece model and the hardest move is a double-layered crimp. But fear not, Juliette will won’t leave you out to pasture. She will patiently lead to success. So silence those nay (neigh?) sayers out there and jump on for a fun ride.
Origami Beyond Disability
Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a therapist, origami is a useful tool to help those with challenges. As an art therapist, Toshiko has developed her own unique philosophy of using origami in therapeutic settings. She will discuss her approach and teach traditional models with a few modifications that she has used to great success in her work, including Parkinson’s and dementia clients.
