OrigamiUSA and the OMGNYC (Origami Meetup Group in New York City) are co-sponsoring the Oversized Folding Competition at OrigamiUSA Convention 2010!

Last year's event was so much fun and such a success we decided to reprise it this year! Don't miss out and sign up soon to get your spot this year! (We ran out of paper and space last year because we had over 30 teams participate)

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to fold a life sized elephant or giraffe? or an oversized geometric modular or flowers? This is your chance to try it out! The event will take place on Sunday Evening. Participants can receive their paper at 8pm and start folding. At 9pm the presentations will begin. Even if you don't want to participate, it is fascinating to watch.

Entries will be judged on originality, size, and folding skills and there will be lots of fun prizes for various levels of folding as well. New folders are encouraged to try and fold simple models, there will be prizes for multiple categories. Remember simple is always best when folding large.

Teams of two (regular models) or four (modulars) will have 1 hour to construct the biggest most impressive models they can make using paper as big as 9 feet square (we will provide different colors of seamless photo back paper for each team) Teams must sign up before the event and announce which model they plan to fold. (This is to help us prepare the paper needed for the event)

The list of teams and models will be posted online and during convention. New signups will be taken until Saturday Night before the event. The sign up sheet will be available at the Information Desk in the Great Hall. Some practice paper will be available on request so you can try out the paper and your test models on Friday and Saturday before the event.

If you don't have a teammate and you would like to participate, we can match you up with someone who is also interested.

Information you should include:

  • TEAM NAME: (think of a cool clever name for your team)
  • FOLDER'S NAMES: (2-4 people depending on the model you are folding, if you need a folding partner we can match you up with someone at convention)
  • MODEL: (just so we can get an idea of what kind of paper to prepare, this can be changed once you get to convention)
  • CREATOR: (if you know who the creator is)
  • SIZE OF PAPER NEEDED: (9 foot square) (4.5 foot square) (modular) (other: 1x2, et.)
  • COLOR OF PAPER PREFERRED: Red, Blue, Red, Pink, Green, Yellow, White (color is not guaranteed to be provided by choice, we will try our best to match your needs)

Modular teams will have time to prepare the paper before the event, as in cutting it to size. You will be provided with a 9 foot square sheet or 4 4 ½ foot square sheets to cut into the sizes you need for the event. (Please make arrangements ahead of time with Sok for this. Colors can be arranged if planned ahead otherwise you will be assigned random colors)
