This is a listing of the Special Sessions for October 20, 2024, both morning and afternoon sessions.
Bird Basics
Take to the skies and seas to explore the avian world. Sang will be your nature guide as he introduces you to many traditional origami birds. These include a crane, a swan, a penguin, a flapping bird as many others as time permits. Of course, you can also customize your birds with variations of your own. Let your imagination soar in this fun-filled class of modern-day dinos.
Noella Star
Get ready to shine with this amazing modular star by Maximiliano Ortiz of Argentina. Alice will be your astronomer guide and reveal the secrets of this 10-point star. The units are made from duo paper in a 2:3 ratio rectangle. The model is easy to put together and locks together nicely. Have fun exploring the cosmos while remaining on terra firma.
Halloween Origami
Prepare yourselves for the spooky season! Not to fear, Sam will be right beside you as you explore a haunted house with two scary models by Quentin Trollop. Start with a frightening Jack O’Lantern, then embrace the high seas with the Jolly Roger. The skull and crossbones design would suit any pirate flag. Both of these models make use of the two-color sides of the paper, for twice the fun.
Gerbera Flower
It’s never too early to start cultivating your garden. Get your hands into it with this beautiful Gerbera flower by Makoto Yamaguchi, which sits elegantly on a Birdie Box base by Dasa Severova. Keith will patiently help you nurture your bloom. Although no rakes or shovels are needed, a creasing tool to aid in defining corners and points
is always helpful.
Traditional Kusudamas
Fill your house with colorful kusudamas, traditional Japanese decorative balls (literally medicine balls). Nobuko will teach you how to fold these classic modules and show you how to put them together. Looking at them, you’d never guess that one is sewn together, and another is glued together. Nevertheless, the results are sure to impress. Use duo paper and make colorful creations for every room!
Year of the Horse
It’s still a few years away (2026), but you can get started taming your horses. Let Maria be your trainer and you’ll have a stable full of elegant equines. The Pureland Horse by Marc Kirschenbaum only requires mountain and valley folds and the Horse Head by Leyla Torres has only 6 folds. The two-toned Rocking Horse is by Jose Thomas Buitrago. All can be used for cards, package decorations and perhaps even a cupcake topper. Up to 3 other models will be taught as time permits.
