Himanshu likes to create a new model for each event he teaches. He came up with this beautiful snowflake that originated from his snow crystals, which were designed for his students combining techniques they had learned such as making a hexagon from as square, a tato fold, petal fold, open sink, etc. We are excited for him to present this brand new model, never taught elsewhere. Supplies:

Recommended paper: 80-100 GSM copy paper.
Before the session participants need to be ready with a hexagon with 16 x16 x 16 triangle grid.

"Balance" won the August 2016 design challenge from The Origami Forum; the competition's theme was "mechanical origami". Every submitted model had to be folded from a single square, and "Balance" was no exception! The model mixes both practical and action origami. Gerardo–from Colombia–is very passionate about practical origami. He has created over 50 functional models, and "Balance" is among his most popular and challenging ones. It came to be thanks to years of experience designing and folding origami boxes, and related models. Supplies:

Participants must have experience dividing the paper into thirds to attend.

One square of 12 x 12 to 14 x 14 in (30 x 30 to 35 x 35 cm) and 70 to 90 g/m² kraft paper, and at least eight standard-size marbles or pebbles (of the same size of marbles) to insert inside the fulcrum. They aren't for the "weighing pans" on the left and right. They are for the fulcrum, the triangular prism at the bottom that supports the beam. Balance won't work without the marbles or pebbles inside! Tweezers might also come in handy. Origami Truchet Tiling

For our last class we will travel down under to Australia and meet up with Winnie Leung. She will be teaching us about Truchet Tiles. Truchet Tiles were first described by Sebastian Truchet way back in 1704. The original version consists of squares split along the diagonal, with one half colored black and one half colored white (which means there are 4 possible variations). These 4 tiles can then be combined to form very intricate patterns.

In this class, Winnie will demonstrate a simple method to create any combination of Truchet Tiling of any size (in theory) via origami.
But be prepared to do lots of closed sinks!
(There won’t be enough time to make the 6x6 model. However, we’ll go through enough theory and practice so you can make your own big version in your own time).

Supplies:

A few sheets of strong 6” paper like Tant or copy paper (cut into squares). Kami is not recommended-too fragile.

Supplies:

1 sheet of 6” (15 cm) origami (kami) paper for a Blooming Flower.
1 sheet of 6” (15 cm) origami (kami) paper for a Rose. Once you have mastered the rose, try it in a nice paper like glassine. 1 sheet of 3” green and white, or green duo paper for a base of rose.
We will need tweezers to shape the center of the rose.

Fynn Jackson, from South Africa, will teach us about mask making. The art of mask folding has become quite popular nowadays. Classical origami consists of only straight lines, in comparison, mask folding utilizes both curved lines, straight lines and other abstract angles. This opens up a whole new world of design possibilities.

We will be folding Mask 20, a design that consists of a face merged with a simple pattern. This is the perfect mask for both beginner and experienced folders. It is one of the top 3 masks normally recommended for people interest in learning this technique.

The second continent in our origami summer travels will be Europe to visit Jannie van Schuylenburg to fold a kami paper carrier. She will show us how to modify the carrier to fit various sizes of paper. Origami travelers need a way to transport their paper for folding. Jannie will show us this amazing paper carrier that comes with a lock! If time permits, we will also fold a container to hold 4" paper.

Supplies:

Preferably 1 sheet of craft paper of 53x18 cm. Craft paper works best, but any other paper is okay. 1 sheet of 7.5x7.5 cm. A pencil and scale (ruler) with Centimeters.
; Also prepare: 1 sheet of craft paper of 68x25 cm and 1 sheet of 10x10 cm or 4 inches-if time permits we will fold a container for 4" paper.

Our Origami Connect Summer session will take us around the world, learning models from creators from 6 different continents. We hope you sign up for the full itinerary! Our journey will start in North America with Jane Rosemarin teaching Sweet Paper’s Balloon (Secret) Box. You can make this with some left-over maps from your previous travels. This is our kick-off event and your completed box will serve as a place to store your keepsakes from your travels.

Supplies:

two sheets of either A5 or 8 1/2 x 6 1/8 inches;
Decorative papers look good, and two coordinating patterns or one pattern and one solid are especially attractive. For your first try, choose a pattern (or solid color) that doesn’t hide the creases and a paper that holds a crease well. Copy paper is good. Foil would be terrible. Only one side shows. Optional: A ribbon or cord for hanging the model.
