Today's Theme: Lillian's Birthday

Have a slice of cake! Choose the flavor and the icing! This model looks like a slice of cake and it is also a box that can hold a surprise for a birthday or any special occasion. This model is made up of two triangular boxes with a filler of a different color to form the filling of the layer cake. An additional one or two small squares are used to make the decoration to put on top. Arlene Gorchov will teach us this fun model!

Today’s Theme: Representational Origami

This is a complex model, containing several complex sinks, and requires precise precreasing.

Representational origami is one of the most well-known, and perhaps one of the earliest, types of origami. The first representational origami sculptures were probably butterflies attached to sake bottles at Shinto weddings in Japan. One of the best known representational models is the crane.

Robert Lang's representational designs are well-known for their great detail, realism, and complexity. The Garibaldi is the state fish of California.

Today’s Theme: Stars

Many paper folders like to make origami stars. Stars can have a varying number of points and can be made from one piece of paper, or many. Using mathematical principles, Carmen Sprung, from Germany, is well known for designing many clever and delightful star designs.

Today’s Theme: Dollar Bill Folding

Paper currency is readily available paper for folding --- just look in your wallet! There are many clever models made from dollar bills, sometimes incorporating objects pictured on the bill as part of the design. You can transform your dollar bills into clothing, hearts, flowers, and much more. Dollar bill origami enthusiasts like to give folded bills to servers as a tip.

Mark Mordan will teach two models using United States dollar bills. The Bunny Bill is a magic trick with a rabbit popping out of a top hat. The Four-leaf Clover is a dollar bill folded to resemble the title subject.

Today’s Theme: Wet Folding

Learn two different styles of wet-folding, "Zone" and "Full Sheet."

Wet-folding has many advantages over dry-folding. Besides expressive shaping, wet-folding preserves the integrity of the fibers in your paper (dry-folding breaks and weakens them!). Wet-folding allows you to use many more kinds of papers for origami, including heavy paperboard. Michael LaFosse is known for the expressiveness of his models, which he often achieves through wet-folding. Michael will teach two models to help demonstrate the fine points and advantages of each style.

You will practice "zone" wet-folding with an origami butterfly that Michael named for Lillian Oppenheimer, whose birthdate, October 24, begins "World Origami Days." Zone wet-folding moistens only the line or small area that is about to be folded, leaving most of the paper dry. This style of wet-folding produces a crisp, resilient model and may be used on almost any kind of paper, including standard origami paper. It is an excellent choice when a clean, geometric style is to be preserved in the model.

You will practice "full sheet" wet-folding by way of Michael's "Happy-Good-luck Bat." Full sheet wet-folding allows for lyrical, rounded shapes, and expressive 3-D modeling. This bat is a delightful model in time for the Halloween season!

Today’s Theme: Innovation

How are new forms of paper folding developed? We have been introduced to quite a few different types of origami, from some of the most traditional (like representational), to new innovations (like tessellations), and there will be more types to come before World Origami Days are over! A somewhat different take on creating a new approach is to combine various forms. Beth Johnson has managed to accomplish that feat by taking several forms of origami and melding them together to create some new and exciting models.

This model uses a spiral pattern inspired by the work of Tomoko Fuse. In this class, you will learn how to fold the model, and you will also learn the technique for folding origami spirals.

Today’s Theme: Boxes

Boxes, bowls, vases! Making origami containers is a popular activity. One of the earliest box designs is the masu box, which is simple and elegant. Traditionally it was used as a way to measure out a standard portion of rice. The masu box and many bowls and vases are made with one sheet of paper, but there are also some wonderful modular boxes in interesting shapes --- square, hexagonal, octagonal….and many more. Arnold Tubis has designed one sheet boxes that have beautiful 3D designs on the top. In collaboration with Crystal Mills, he wrote a book with many box designs and in-depth materials to guide mathematical exploration of these boxes. Char Morrow test-folded all of Arnold and Crystal’s boxes for that book.

Char will teach a 2-color box top that has a decorative "bow" (Box 10 from Unfolding Mathematics with Origami Boxes by Tubis and Mills) and a masu box bottom, sized to match the top. If time permits, she will teach Box 8 from the same book.

Today's Theme: Origami Plants
Flowers and plants have inspired origami artists for decades. Of course, they are so beautiful—no explanation needed—but they are also folded objects themselves. They unfurl/unpleat from their secret hideaways when ready to bloom. Many of them offer a ready-made crease pattern for paper-folders to follow. Others inspire an abstract rendition of a flower or leaf. And they pair well with all of those containers that we love to fold—vases, pots, etc. Yara Yagi will teach us an elegant succulent plant and vase of her own design.

Today’s Theme: Geometric Origami

Origami is an excellent medium for modeling many geometric shapes, both 2D and 3D. These models can be one-sheet models, but many of them are modular --- made from many folded, and interlocked units. With origami, one can make all of the Platonic Solids (not solid using origami!), and many, many more complex shapes. Tom Hull has invented modules that can be used to construct Buckyballs with hundreds of units, as well as the well-known FIT (Five Intersecting Tetrahedra) model. In this class, he will teach us a model that has interesting repeated embedded shapes. We might also learn patience!

This model starts with an octagon twist, which we then purse, unfold, and pull out a second, smaller octagon twist, which we then purse, unfold, pull out a third octagon twist, and repeat. This is a complex-level model, but a lot of fun to fold!

Today’s Theme: Letterfolds

It’s always nice to receive a note from a friend, but how much more fun it is to receive that note folded into a beautiful origami model with the note inside. School children have been folding these notes forever. You can fold your note into a heart shape, a flower shape, a hexagon, and more. Michel Grand will teach us a few of his favorite, clever letter folds.
