Self Closing Box
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Philip Chapman-Bell and Giovanni Maltagliati
Teacher: Belle Fernandez
Description:
Folded from a single sheet of paper, this box becomes an ideal gift container for any special occasion. This model was designed and created by Philip Chapman-Bell, but it has also been attributed to Giovanni Maltagliati. An elegant locking mechanism secures the contents of this box in place. Thicker paper such as scrapbook paper will produce a sturdy 3-inch box with a firm lock.
Special Requirements: Precise folding will ensure that the model will collapse in place and close properly.

Tato Bowl
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Belle Fernandez
Teacher: Belle Fernandez
Description:
This model begins as a tato and opens up into a bowl; hence the name. It is folded from a hexagon. The model is both functional and decorative when made from heavy duo paper (e.g., tant or scrapbooking paper).
Special Requirements: Precise folding aids in collapsing and opening the bowl. Ideally, it also helps if the folder has a basic understanding of the mechanics of the Fujimoto twist.
Leadership Kaleidocycle
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Joel Stern
Teacher: Joel Stern
Description:
An educational software company I once worked for used to promote a Leadership Framework that was illustrated using an Escher-like ring of adjoining geometric shapes. The center of the ring lists the four core values of a good leader; around them in dark blue are displayed attributes of good leadership; and around those in light blue are their "non-leadership" equivalents. When I saw this I immediately was reminded of the book "M.C. Escher Kaleidocycles" by Doris Schattschneider and Wallace Walker, which takes Escher's beautiful repeating images and turns them into 3-dimensional rotating paper sculptures. I created an origami version of the Leadership Framework that flexes completely around. It's made from a strip of paper printed on one side. For the class, I will provide trimmed Leadership Framework paper strips, ready for folding. Tape will be provided to complete the assembly.

Sonobe Module Workshop
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Mitsonobu Sonobe
Teacher: Mike Naughton
Description:
A brief survey of some of the models that can be made using the Sonobe Module. These models range from very low intermediate to considerably more challenging, making this workshop ideal both for those unfamiliar with modular origami and those with a firm foundation who want to learn more. Several models will be shown, and students will choose which one(s) they want to learn. Different students may end up learning different models (which is why this is called a "workshop"), and the teacher acts as a facilitator, ensuring that everyone is successful. Those expecting the teacher to stand in front and teach one model step by step will be disappointed and are encouraged to choose another class.
Spinning Top
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Manpei Arai
Teacher: Andrew Ting
Description:
A fun action model, Manpei Arai's 'Spinning Top' is a wonderful toy that is as much a delight to fold as it is to play with.
Special Requirements: It is recommended that students considering this class be capable of folding at the intermediate to high intermediate level; in order to function properly, the completed model involves accurate pre-creasing and a collapse of medium difficulty, both of which are contingent upon a folder's precision.
Dollar Butterfly
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Michael LaFosse
Teacher: Damien Marcotte
Description:
This model is based on the Dollar Butterfly by Michael LaFosse, found in "Money Origami Kit" (2009) by M. LaFosse and R. Alexander. It is easy to modify and once learned it makes a great restaurant tip, a lapel pin, or decoration on a money tree!
Special Requirements: Bring new, crisp 1 or 2 dollar bills; although I will have some to exchange with students. I will also provide larger-than-money practice paper for those preferring to use that to learn the model.
Nova
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Evan Zodl
Teacher: Evan Zodl
Description:
In this class, you will learn how to fold this relatively simple and elegant modular star. This design is interesting because it can be folded from 5 or more units. We will start off with the 6 unit version and, time permitting, we will fold some interesting variations or stars with more modules.
Mette Ring
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Mette Pedersen
Teacher: Jan Polish
Description:
Fold a bunch of simple modules and come up with this beautiful ring, which highlights your paper choices. Fold it with small paper for a pin, with medium paper for an ornament, and larger paper for a picture frame. Variation shown if time permits.
Modular Beveled Star
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Nick Robinson, Tomoko Fusé
Teacher: Ron Arruda
Description:
This Modular Star was discovered independently by Nick Robinson of England and Tomoko Fusé of Japan. Handy for holiday decor, coming right up! Fairly easy in the 5-armed version, but can be 6- or 7-armed without much trouble too. Modules lock-well together.
Western Dragon
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Casey Shields
Teacher: Casey Shields
Description:
We'll be folding an origami dragon of high-intermediate complexity (perhaps shading a bit more towards the complex side). All fold angles are multiples of 22.5 degrees and relatively few folds are more than 2-ply. This makes it easier to retain accuracy and fold from a small square. The long limbs also make a variety of poses possible. Time permitting, I’d like to show how the projection or 'crossing diagonals' method can be applied to designs formed by tiling bases, such as this one. It is a very intuitive technique which almost instantly made me a more capable designer upon learning it, so I am excited to pass it along!

Equilateral-Triangle Modulars
Level: Simple
Creator: Arnold Tubis
Teacher: Arnold Tubis
Description:
Most origami modular rings are formed from units folded from squares. In this class, we explore several of the many simple but elegant rings that can be easily assembled with tightly-locked units folded from equilateral triangles. After learning how to fold and one-cut an equilateral triangle shape from a square, you will learn how to make several modular rings and be given general guidance on how to make many more on your own. Some models will be folded from 6 units, some from 12.
Special Requirements: Simple to low-intermediate folding skills and the ability to fold accurately.
Peacock
Pentas
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Meenakshi Mukerji
Teacher: Meenakshi Mukerji
Description:
Pentas is a modular design with color change. Though best when made with 30 units, we will make a 12 unit model in the class. It is a previously unpublished design from 2017 being taught for the first time at PCOC 2017.
Bird of Paradise Flower
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Meenakshi Mukerji
Teacher: Meenakshi Mukerji
Description:
Bird of Paradise is a vivid orange and blue tropical flower. This is a two piece design: one for the flower and one for the stem/calyx. The two pieces lock together.
Special Requirements: Orange-blue duo paper will be supplied by teacher. You will need one sheet of 9.5-10-inch green paper for the stem; please save it from your welcome kit or get your own.
Squares Star
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Ekaterina Lukasheva
Teacher: Ekaterina Lukasheva
Description:
I'd like to offer a short lecture about how tessellations and modulars correspond to each other. For the first part, I will show how to switch designs from tessellations to modulars and vice versa. For the second part, I will teach the Squares Star as an example.
Special Requirements: Math danger! Students must be comfortable with surviving a lecture with elements of math.
Decorative Triangle Boxes
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Arnold Tubis
Teacher: Arnold Tubis
Description:
I have designed many simple (but, I hope, elegant) decorative-lid triangular boxes from regular hexagons and will teach two of my favorites (image of one of them shown here) including the bottom units. If time permits, I will teach a way of closing the box at the bottom so that a separate bottom unit is not necessary.
Special Requirements: Intermediate folding skills and the ability to fold accurately.
Mary Anne's Butterfly *
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Robert J. Lang
Teacher: Robert Lang
Description:
* BROADCAST-- This class will be presented to students in a classroom at the convention site and simultaneously broadcast to an off-site audience on the web. A butterfly with antennae, foldable from 15 cm kami (and many other types of paper).
Cardinal
Squirrel
Double Jawed Dragon Head
Star Pentagon Dollar
$ Flower-in-a-Pot *
Level: Complex
Creator: Herman Lau
Teacher: Michael Sanders
Description:
* BROADCAST-- This class will be presented to students in a classroom at the convention site and simultaneously broadcast to an off-site audience on the web. Classic Herman Lau flower-in-a-pot from a single dollar bill. This is by far my favorite bill fold to leave as a gift or a tip. I've never had anyone wish to take it apart and spend it, once given. Mr. Lau went out of his way to help me teach it to his specifications when I requested to teach it at my first OrigamiUSA convention. There aren't any official diagrams released and he said people were getting the proportions wrong. So he insured that I taught it the way he designed the model.
Special Requirements: Bring crisp, brand-spanking new dollar bills.
Bar Envelope
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Unknown
Teacher: Andre Van Meulebrouck
Description:
This envelope gets my vote as (by far!) the best origami envelope ever devised. Simple and practical, it makes good use of the paper. It is scalable, giftable. I will provide free paper in various sizes (to fit dollar bills, checks, or gift cards). It's a great envelope for organizing crease patterns, cut paper, etc..
Special Requirements: While I think this envelope is pretty simple, it is low intermediate (due to a few folds that may be confusing to beginners). Fellow students should be able to help less gifted folders. Since this model is reasonably simple, I am hoping to be done in less than 45 minutes, in which case I will fill in the remaining time by showing how to fold a pixel unit (for modular origami).
Star Infinity
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Francesco Guarnieri
Teacher: Helen Sperber
Description:
This model contains 3 stars within it. We will cut a 6 inch octagon from a 9 inch square.
Special Requirements: Please bring scissors to cut an octagon. You should know how to fold a preliminary base and squash folds. This model requires very strong and sharp folds. There will be frequent opening and collapsing of the model. A bone folder may be helpful.
Flor 4 U
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Jose Meeusen
Teacher: Chila Caldera
Description:
Learn an 8-module wreath by Jose Meeusen of the Netherlands just in time for Christmas! The module is Intermediate, but only seven steps. The model is easy to assemble.
Special Requirements: The modules are made from 1x2 rectangles (ie, half a square). Duo is nice, both sides will show. I will provide already-cut duo papers, or the students can cut papers of their choice before the class. Four squares, cut in half to make 8 1x2 rectangles, are required.
Celtic Brooch

Nobuko's Puff Ring
Spinning Shooting Star
Ribbon Wrapped Box, version 2
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Glenn Sapaden
Teacher: Glenn Sapaden
Description:
This model appears to be simply a gift-wrapped package bound with three interlocking ribbons. It is actually a six-piece modular box that takes advantage of a color change to simulate the ribbons. This is perfect model to use as a holiday decoration. This version is an advancement on the model taught at the last PCOC.
Special Requirements: Students should be comfortable with folding and assembling modular models. Assembly is relatively simple, but, as with most modular models, precise folding is crucial. Note that students will be using each modular piece as a template for each subsequent piece they fold.
$ One for the Money
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Glenn Sapaden
Teacher: Glenn Sapaden
Description:
This model is simple representation of the numeral one. It was created in response to a job project, but lately I used it to celebrate the recent opening of a new sports arena in my area (where I spend a LOT of these models).
Special Requirements: This model requires the ability to fold a model into thirds. Students should be comfortable with utilizing the landmarks on a dollar bill. Students should bring crisp, foldable dollars bills to class.
$ Rooster
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Glenn Sapaden
Teacher: Glenn Sapaden
Description:
This model was created to celebrate The Year of the Rooster. The design takes advantage of the dollar's design and landmarks, including the Rooster's eyes.
Special Requirements: This model requires 1) folding a model into thirds, 2) performing a sink fold, and 3) (as an option) wet folding. This class is rated as high intermediate due to the precise folding required and the utilization of the dollar bill’s landmarks. Students should bring crisp, foldable dollars bills to class.

Polygonal Medallion I
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Takaya Iwamoto
Teacher: Takaya Iwamoto
Description:
If we start with a piece of paper cut in any regular polygon shape and apply symmetric folding, the result will show many surprisingly interesting patterns. Hence the name I gave to this new design: Polygonal Medallion. In this class two pentagon based examples will be presented. The attendees will have hands-on experience to understand this new idea using pre-cut printed papers to make medallion-like geometrically beautiful objects. Precut printed papers will be provided for this session and the attendants are required to make precise scoring along the diagram lines in order to produce perfectly symmetric patterns.
Special Requirements: Bring a ruler and a ball point pen for scoring. Fine to medium width is preferable.
Compass Rose
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Jorma Oksanen
Teacher: Maria Velazquez
Description:
This charming model is titled a "compass rose" by its creator. It does indeed look like a compass, but the creator also refers to it as a rose.
Special Requirements: Students must know how to fold a bird base. It is a plus to be able to do the stretch bird base, but not essential. If you could come to class with one or more bird bases pre-folded, that would be helpful, but also not essential.
Giant Squid
