These are the classes that have been submitted for teaching on Saturday and Sunday. Please note that teachers' plans evolve and there is no guarantee that any specific class listed here will be taught.
Skeletal Dodecahedron
Business Card Basics
Partial Compound of Five Cubes
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Jeannine Mosely
Teacher: Jeannine Mosely
Description:
This a geometric modular folded from strips of heavy paper or card stock. The units are simple to fold, but challenging to assemble. Some students may need extra time for assembly. Materials will be provided for the class.
Three Dragons
Level: Complex
Creator: Frank Ling
Teacher: Frank Ling
Description:
Teaching a simple dragon, an intermediate level dragon, and an advanced dragon. They will be taught in that order, with diagrams provided for each. I would recommend that teachers come in the beginning of the lesson as the simple dragon is a great model to teach beginners who'd like to make this mythical creature. People may come and go as they please.
Special Requirements: All 3 models can be folded from 15cm kami, but larger paper may be required for the advanced dragon. Open to all skill levels, but do not stay for the more difficult dragons if you are not comfortable with advanced folds.
Rupert the Tyrannosaur
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Travis Nolan
Teacher: Travis Nolan
Description:
This is an intermediate tyrannosaur, one of my first satisfactory 22.5 degree designs that uses "Y" molecules. It is a fun model to fold and not too hard.
Special Requirements: Experience with 22.5 designs (besides traditional ones) is recommended. Knowledge of open sinks, reverse-folds, squash-folds, etc. will also be advantageous. Six inch kami is suitable, but bigger paper may be easier for some.
Stingray
Bruce's Bloom / Star
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Bruce Bloom
Teacher: Belle Fernandez
Description:
This attractive model is folded from a single square sheet. The depth of the center determines whether the model becomes a star or a bud - a folder's choice.
Special Requirements: Careful precise folding contributes to collapsing the model into a lovely star or bud.
The Urchin
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: DanaRose Brown
Teacher: DanaRose Brown
Description:
Fairly simple modular model that can be created from 8 or more squares of paper. Named "The Urchin" for its resemblance to a sea urchin when viewed from the side.
Special Requirements: Model assembly may take more time than the allotted class time in some cases (such as if someone decides to create the model using more than 8 modules), but in most cases can be completed within the class time.
Snow Flake Star
John Montroll's Giraffe
Lazy Susan
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Traditional
Teacher: Philip Chapman-Bell
Description:
Samuel Randlett tells us that the Lazy Susan is a traditional model from Sichuan province in China and that the five compartments represent the five happinesses. Philip Shen (who learned the model from Chris Chow) brought it to America and shared it with the Origami Center crowd. The model is difficult to learn from diagrams -- at least, I found it so -- and is a model every new folder should have in his or her vocabulary.
Jack Rabbit
Angel Shark
Vega
Figure Skater
Level: Complex
Creator: Will Hartman
Teacher: Will Hartman
Description:
A minimalist figure skater. It's a bit more complicated than it looks, but nothing too crazy. A few collapses and sinks. There may be some minor differences from the pictured model in the version I'll teach.Rough diagrams will be provided.
Special Requirements: Foil paper (or a willingness to shape with glue) are recommended.
Buffalo
Bouncy Unit Icosahedron
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Tom Hull
Teacher: Zander Bolgar
Description:
The Bouncy Unit Icosahedron is a fun and not-too-challenging modular model that is strong and bounces! The unit can be assembled in into many polyhedra and produces a very entertaining result for all.
Special Requirements: Minor modular experience is helpful. 3-inch paper will be provided for the class.
Navel Shell
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Tomoko Fuse
Teacher: Brian Yoon
Description:
When it comes to seashells, Tomoko Fuse probably has the most famous design with this spiral origami Navel Shell. The model does not require complex folding. However, precise folding makes for a cleaner, crisper spiral on the shell.
Special Requirements: Bone folders and straight-edges are recommended! They will help tremendously in creasing the paper.
To The Queen of Crowns
Unicorn
Intro to Origami/Storygami
Level: Simple
Creator: Traditional

Ryu Zin Jr.
Level: Supercomplex
Creator: Jason Ku
Teacher: Jason Ku
Description:
Inspired by Satoshi Kamiya's ultra-complex model, this model is a substantially simplified version of a baby eastern dragon, considerably shorter and less detailed. Students should have experience folding box-pleated models from crease patterns; we will test this prerequisite at the beginning of the class.
Four Leaf Clover
Magic Rose Cube
Mizuhiki Knot and Card
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Traditional
Teacher: Brian Kolins
Description:
This class will combine a traditional origami envelope/card with a traditional Mizuhiki (Japanese Knot tying) knot to complement the card. The origami envelope, suitable for writing notes, will have a mizuhiki knot attached. Mizuhiki cords require cutting, the origami model will not! The origami envelope requires 8.5x11 inch paper. Mizuhiki cord will be provided for the class.
Pinwheel Masu
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Sy Chen
Teacher: Sy Chen
Description:
Although this design looks like Tomoko Fuse's basic modular box, it is actually folded from a single duo-color square. A hidden twisted square fold is used to seal all corners. The finished model has better locking than the traditional masu box.
Emma's Secret Star
Elephant
Rocket Ship
Tensegrity Module
Interstellar
WXYZ
Simple Owl
Simple Panda
Six Impossible
The Pony
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Diego Fernando Becerra Ramirez
Teacher: Diego Fernando Becerra Ramirez
Description:
The process of folding a pony as well as the design process will be taught. During the folding some of the specific reference points are not too easy to find and will require precision in the folds. The difficulty is due to the design process, all of which will be explained in the class.
Crane Mandala
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Unknown
Teacher: Brian Beitel
Description:
This is a very beautiful model that showcases the traditional crane in a new light. This modular model uses 8 square sheets of paper to complete. It can be folded from 7.5x7.5cm paper pretty easily, but I would recommend using 15x15cm paper to get familiar with the model first and then try to make a smaller one. This is a low intermediate model and I encourage anybody to take the class. I will make sure that every student has a completed model before they leave.
5-Point Twist Star with Stripe
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Omer Shalev
Teacher: Omer Shalev
Description:
My approach to the 5-pointed twist star is to show how to make the first stripe and then we will make the remaining outward stripes. It almost reminds me of a flag. The model will be flat for the most part but some accurate folding is necessary.
15 Degree 3D Twist Stars 2018
Chequered Spinner Cube
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Max Hulme
Teacher: Deb Pun
Description:
Do you love modulars? Do you love action models? This Checquered Spinner Cube will delight you! Max Hulme (U.K.) created the Chequered Spinner Cube (2017), which is a variation on his Pixel Unit (2007). You will fold and assemble 6 identical square sheets of 6-inch (15 cm) plain kami. Glue or scissors are not required. The finished cube holds together very sturdily and is about 3 inches (7.5 cm) from pointy bit to pointy bit. To make this cube spin, Max suggests, "Hold lightly between finger and thumb. Blow slightly off centre to spin the cube."
Mariposa Butterfly
My Puppy
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Nobuko Okabe
Teacher: Steve Buck
Description:
Clever model designed for the Year of the Dog -- described by Nobuko Okabe as follows:I created this dog model for my middle school origami club kids about six years ago (2011). It’s a very simple model, but the height of the dog, the sizes of head and tail as well as the shaping of face and body are all adjustable to each folder’s taste to make the dog personal, as shown in the photo. So I named it “My Puppy.”
Twist Fish
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Gay Merrill Gross
Teacher: Stephen Buck
Description:
Based on a letter fold from a rectangle, this model was introduced by Gay Merrill Gross and used as the annual gift in 2012. It is based on a traditional letterfold that Gay introduced to John Cunliffe. He then made an arrangement of the model that could be folded from a square.
Little Book
1 Paper Canoe, 30+ Models
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Laura Kruskal
Teacher: Laura Kruskal
Description:
What Can You Do with a Paper Canoe? From this simple traditional base, I've created more than 30 models. They include boxes, frames, candy dishes, action models, a mask, a modular crown, and a magnificent flapping bird. We'll make as many as time will allow! Ideal for origami teachers dealing with novice folders. Here is a quote from Leyla Torres: I’d like to make a special mention of the class I took with Laura Kruskal. Laura taught a traditional paper canoe and several charming and simple models based on that canoe. It cannot be overstated what an inspirational gift Laura is to the origami community (from comments on 2013 Albuquerque PCOC convention, http://www.origamispirit.com/2013/11/a-magical-origami-convention-pcoc-2013-albuquerque-nm/).
Special Requirements: 8 1/2 x 11 inch colored paper will be provided for the class
Flapping Bird
Two Spinners
Eifel Star
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Hans-Werner Guth
Teacher: Judith Powell
Description:
The Eifel Star is a 12-piece modular that is assembled in a manner that can produce a star with two similar sides or two very different sides, depending on how you orient the paper. It can make a versatile decoration for holiday trees or for more general decorative purposes.
Special Requirements: Each model requires at least 12 sheets of (preferably 7.5 cm -- 3 inch -- paper), half of which are solid colors and half are decorative patterns.
2018 Convention Crown
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Laura Kruskal
Teacher: Laura Kruskal
Description:
For many years I have created and taught a modular crown especially for the convention. This year, I've re-invented an earlier favorite: the OrigamiUSA 50th Anniversary Crown, which incorporated our sailboat logo into the design of the module (published in The Paper, 2008, with diagrams by Marcio Noguchi). My new 95th birthday version uses fewer modules, all from colorful, bordered 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper. I will provide 8 1/2 x 11 bordered paper (with central colored rectangle, white on back).
Longhorn Skull, Opus 713
Mary Anne's Butterfly
Spin, Dart, Loop!
Level: Simple

Strawberry
Mark's Star / Jakob's Stern
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Mark Kennedy / Jakob Maier
Teacher: Belle Fernandez
Description:
In celebration of Mark Kennedy's life and contribution to origami, as well as his generosity with his time, humor, teaching and love of origami, I would like to share this beautiful star that he created with all who wish to learn his model. This star was also created independently by Jakob Maier. The star is folded from one square piece of paper. No cutting or gluing is required.
Special Requirements: Careful and accurate folding will result in a clean collapse and an attractive model.
(Pea) Whistle
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Angel Ecija Blanco
Teacher: Talo Kawasaki
Description:
The return of an instant classic: Angel Ecija Blanco’s Whistle which resembles the popular “pea whistle”. Stiffer cover stock paper will be provided, cut to the right proportions. Join us to fold one of the few origami models which makes real sound and toot its praises.
Special Requirements: If you have scissors (important) and glue (optional), please bring these to class.
Foley the Pony
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Michael LaFosse & Richard Alexander
Teacher: Talo Kawasaki
Description:
Discover the magic of this wonderful colt: not only is it an action model, it also makes trotting sounds. Crisp paper is key to making the sound. Regular origami “kami” works but stiffer Tant brand paper and even square printer paper make deeper hoof klip-klops. But don’t scoff at its three legs because you’ll miss all of the fun horsing around we’ll have.
Special Requirements: The ability to fold accurately and crisply is highly recommended for this model. It's also best to use 10 inch or larger paper.
Treasure Chest
Three Traditional Models
Sailboat Envelope
Level: Simple
Creator: Michael LaFosse
Teacher: Michael LaFosse
Description:
Here is a clever and practical self-locking envelope that sports the well-known symbol of Lillian Oppenheimer's Origami Center of America (OCA). Michael LaFosse designed this envelope in 1998 when Jan Polish requested that he create a simple model that could be used in a folding-challenge game for the 1998 OrigamiUSA Convention. This being the 40th Anniversary of the Origami Center of America, Michael chose to include the OCA origami sailboat in his design. The 1998 OrigamiUSA Convention Game: Each participant was given an envelope that contained the diagrams for this new model. The catch: The diagram sheet had been torn into pieces! Contestants had to first scramble to put the diagram sheet back together. It was essential that the model be new and unknown, preventing the advantage to anyone who would have been familiar with the folding of an existing design!
Pig and Wolf
Princess
African Elephant
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Casey Shields
Teacher: Casey Shields
Description:
This African Elephant is constructed using tiled 22.5 degree bases. While somewhat abstract in form, it has reasonably well proportioned flaps for the legs, tail, ears, tusks, head, mouth and trunk.
Special Requirements: The square-edge to model-length ratio is roughly 3 to 1. While this model can be folded from very small squares, I would recommend a confident folder should start with no smaller than 6" square.
$ Encyclopedia
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Glen Sapaden
Teacher: Jean Baden-Gillette
Description:
This multiple dollar bill model (15 one-dollar bills total) is a set of 12 books (one bill for each book with letters A-L on the front left of the bill). Two dollars make 2 shelves and one dollar creates the case that holds the shelves.
Special Requirements: If you are planning on taking this class, you should begin to collect dollar bills with various letters on the front of the bill. They are in the circle on the left side. Bills do not have to be brand new, only in fairly good condition. Play money will be available for those who do not have the real thing.
Kid Goat
Dragon Guitar
Level: Complex
Creator: Jonathan Hirschberg
Teacher: Jonathan Hirschberg
Description:
This is an origami model of an electric guitar, inspired by the B.C. Rich Draco V Ghost Flame guitar. Its color scheme is white with colored hardware. It has a guitar body with a tremolo bar, a neck with strings, and a head stock with tuning knobs.
Special Requirements: This model involves using both 22.5 degree and box-pleating techniques with guided crease pattern collapses. Students should be familiar with certain 22.5 degree base structures like the bird base or frog base, as well as box-pleat techniques like Elias-stretches. Students should be able to read diagrams and fold from crease patterns.
Cake Dish
Molecular Model of a Diamond
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Unknown
Teacher: Susan Wettling
Description:
A diamond is a regular combination of carbon atoms with four arms. Since this unit has four arms — long and short — you can express a diamond crystal by combining the units. The resulting model also makes a pleasing display. In one hour we can fold several modules and combine them into three or four levels, which are glued to make the model stable. The model requires 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm paper, one color for each level— 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 16
Star Box
Teapot, and Storigami
The Dutchess's Hat
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Unknown
Teacher: Kathryn Paulsen
Description:
Back by popular demand. Wear it to the next royal wedding. Custom fitted, a large square of sturdy white paper will be provided. If time allows, color can be added. A.k.a. Chinese opera hat in Origami On The Go by Margaret Van Sicklen. Hand-drawn instructions will be distributed.
Fujimoto Cube
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Shuzo Fujimoto
Teacher: MaeDean Erb
Description:
This is one of those fascinating models that collapse in the most intriguing way. The complex-simplicity of this cube is stunning and just one of the reasons it is difficult to resist. Make it and smile over and over again.
Twist Rose
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Unknown
Teacher: Mary Jane Kettler
Description:
I learned this great rose after hours at PCOC in 2003. You can fold it with kami, tant, wrapping paper, or just about anything, with minimal shaping or curling the edges. It always looks good. It requires an 8 by 8 grid. The challenge that makes this model high intermediate is that you have to be very precise about locating the 8 creases that make the twist work and then pushing the rose into its 3D shape and reversing the bottom petals. The locking creases are just reverse folds but they are a bit hard to do since they’re inside the model. Toshikazu Kawasaki recognized it as a variation on his rose, creator unknown.
Spider Monkey
Tree Fairy
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: David Brill
Teacher: Kika Salgo
Description:
This modern classic includes rabbit ears, squash folds, mountain folds, and valley folds. It makes an impressive gift, ornament and good luck charm. The fairy has wings, head, arms, legs and even a dress.. all from a single piece of paper. Get your fairy wings aflutter!
Fuse Box with Square Opening
Flower Strip
Kusudama Hortensia
Connected Tessellation
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Francesco Decio
Teacher: Martin Quinn
Description:
This is a tessellation in the sense of a tessellated pavement rather than the more normal origami sense of a tessellation. This is in fact an action model, rotating one square will automatically rotate all of the others. In folding terms the folding sequence is straightforward and does not have anything other than basic valley and mountain folds. The model can be made from any "square" number of units - 4, 9, 16, 25, ...etc but for sake of time we will aim for just 4 units in the class.
Special Requirements: We will start from squares of paper but the modules and joining units are not folded directly from squares and therefore attendees will need to have some means of cutting paper.
Division Dice
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Sy Chen
Teacher: Sy Chen
Description:
This is my first cube dice design from a single square sheet. Each face of the cube is equally divided by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 respectively. A simple pleating technique is used for dividing the square. The HK Cube folding technique will be used to complete the dice. (Kazuo Haga and Kunihiko Kasahara independently designed a cube, named The HK Cube or Trick Dice, from a square using a 4x4 grid. Details can be found in Origami for the Connoisseur by Kasahara and Takahama.)
Sliding Parts
Level: Simple
Creator: Akiko Yamanashi
Teacher: Akiko Yamanashi
Description:
We will learn two versions of this model: the crane and the spiral. The crane version, a variation of Tomoko Fuse’s design, will have an attachment to the wings of the traditional origami crane, making them longer. It is an action model that also works well as a decorative piece. The spiral is composed of multiple parts that can be connected to each other, creating a long, climbing plant-like result. Standard 15 cm paper will be used.
Cube Box with Drawers
Clematis and Cherry Blossom
Mt. Fuji Box
Ho-Oh, the Legendary Pokemon
Level: Complex
Creator: Joe Adia
Teacher: Joe Adia
Description:
Fans of Pokemon or Mythical Beasts will enjoy my Firebird. It is named Ho-Oh in the Pokemon series and it has sacred fire abilities that bestow good fortune and enable powerful god-like attacks. The rare creature is known to shine like a rainbow and my model allows students to decorate the paper with any color they desire. The end result is inside out coloring on the head, tail and wings. The model can be shaped in any way the folder desires, with variations such as an extended wingspan or a flight pose.
Special Requirements: The model is folded from a diagonal of a square (the triangle portion). It consists of squashes, reverse folds, and inside out folding (since the end product is double colored). Knowledge of these techniques is required since the model is considered complex. Folders should also come prepared with the triangular sheet (split from a square). The paper should be 10 to 12 inches at least and the best type to use is double tissue, tissue foil or regular foil. Folders may choose to have their sheet be double colored.
The Real Story of Yin-Yang
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Sy Chen
Teacher: Sy Chen
Description:
Do you know the true origin of yin and yang? In this class, you will learn how to fold two PAC-MEN from two black/white squares. Play with the two PAC-MEN, making them chase and fight each other. Join the class to find out how their fight ends.
Compass Rose II
Bascetta Star
Cristal Hexagonal
Stella Lefty
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Francesco Mancini
Teacher: Char Morrow
Description:
This clever 8 piece star is folded from strips of paper. Two sheets of kami are sufficient to make a very nice star. Though the star looks simple and elegant, there are some intricate folds. They are not super difficult, but patience is required to understand the process and fold accurately. At least three methods for obtaining the correct length strips will be taught, and diagrams will be shared with class participants. Relatively thin paper is recommended. Kami is perfect. Duo is not appropriate for this model. Feel free to use as few as 1 color or as many as 8 colors. Minimum paper requirements: 2 sheets of 15 cm kami. Smaller paper is not recommended. A slicer or scissors is needed.
Special Requirements: This model can be folded by anyone who can be patient and accurate.
Barge and Folding Box
Super Nobu Unit
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Nobuko Okabe
Teacher: Nobuko Okabe
Description:
This is a very simple and very versatile unit that can be connected in different ways to create many different types of 2D and 3D modular models. In the class, we will fold several units together. Then all assembly methods and some of the resulting models will be demonstrated and students can choose which model(s) they want to make. The smallest number of units required to form a modular is two and the largest has no limit. (This unit was named by Tomoko Fuse when she saw it at the 2016 OUSA Convention.)
Special Requirements: These are modular models and some of them may take longer to finish than the class time. All units are folded from 3-inch squares, which will be provided for the class, but if anyone wants to use smaller squares, a paper cutter or scissors will be useful.
Star Sophia (with a variation)
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Carmen Sprung, variation by Margaret Wong
Teacher: Mary Jane Kettler
Description:
This is Carmen Sprung's beautiful Star Sophia with a variation to the last step (created by Margaret Wong) that results in a color reversal in each module. The effect created is of a ribbon wrapping around the star. It requires 6 sheets of duo paper whose sides are in the ratio 2 to (sqrt 3)/2. Precut rectangles will be provided for the class along with instructions on how to get 2 such rectangles from a square of paper.
Origami Base-ics
Level: Simple
Creator: Traditional
Teacher: Ruthanne Bessman
Description:
Introduction to Origami 101 for beginners: Participants will be introduced to basic folding techniques, origami basic folds and bases. Simple traditional models will be taught along with an understanding of how to read diagrams.
Pinwheel Base Collapse
Level: Complex
Creator: Shuzo Fujimoto
Teacher: Tom Hull
Description:
This is an unpublished Fujimoto self-similar model folded from a square that progresses infinitely towards the center. When done, it can be made to open and close in a hypnotic way that is guaranteed to mesmerize gerbils and small children. This is rated as complex because of the difficulty in collapsing the model flat and for the high degree of accuracy needed to make it work.
Flat Star
Estrella Arabesco
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Juan Lopez Figueroa
Teacher: Cylvia Ultz
Description:
This is an attractive star with many interesting twists and folds. It makes a beautiful ornament if folded with foil paper. Precise folding makes for a much easier time with the twist folding. 10" single sided paper is suggested.
Special Requirements: Students should be familiar with twist folding, but I will explain how it is done. If some students don't quite finish folding the model during class time, I will be available in the Hospitality area, happy to help.
Tree
Bug
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Viviane Berty
Teacher: Viviane Berty
Description:
A colorful bug made from special paper created from African fabrics (to be provided for the class). It is folded from a triangle (one-half a 15 cm square cut along the diagonal). We will practice-fold the model first with standard paper and then with the special paper
Special Requirements: The preferred paper is stronger than kami (Tant or Elephant Hide). For the class, the special paper provided will be backcoated with African fabric (cotton).
Archer
Self-Similar Octagon Flower
Level: Complex
Creator: Tom Hull
Teacher: Tom Hull
Description:
This model is folded from a regular octagon. It involves making the whole crease pattern first and then collapsing. It is self-similar, meaning that the crease pattern can, in theory, repeat infinitely to the center of the paper. (You have to decide how far you want to go!) It is infinitely iso-area, meaning that if folded infinitely to the center and from an infinite sheet of paper, both sides of the paper are folding in exactly the same way. (In other words, what you see in the picture happens on the other side too!) The crease pattern itself is fairly simple to fold, but the collapsing process makes this model complex.
Aquileia Kusudama
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Byriah Loper
Teacher: Byriah Loper
Description:
A decorative modular kusudama which has a visual appearance similar to a Sonobe variation, but is unrelated to the Sonobe unit. The units are folded from squares and the finished model is very sturdy and attractive.
Special Requirements: The units do require a reasonable degree of accuracy for a good result.
Trisected Bowl
Level: Low Intermediate
Creator: Kazukuni Endo
Teacher: Deanna Kwan
Description:
This beautiful bowl from square paper requires the trisection of each of the corners of the paper. Careful pre-creasing of mountain and valley folds gives a satisfying collapse into an almost completed bowl. 10 inch kami works, but scrapbook paper weight paper works better. Duo is nice too. I will provide scrapbook paper and assorted duo in various sizes.
Patch Star
Butterfly
Star of Solitude for R
Masu Box
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: David Brill
Teacher: Louise Flax
Description:
I consider this to be a Sake Box, not a Masu Box. It is elegant and deceptively simple on the outside, with a strong structure, all hidden on the inside.
Special Requirements: Strong precise folding, patience and a willingness to do a twist fold ensure success with this challenging, rewarding model. Materials will be provided for the class.
Gift Bag with Handles
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Makoto Yamaguchi
Teacher: Louise Flax
Description:
An elegant bag with a clever handle. The bag is very similar to Kunihiko Kasahara's box, (pg. 275 of "Origami Omnibus"). If time allows, variations and experimenting with templates will be included. One piece of paper is required for the bag and two rectangles are required for the handles.
Sunken Pyramid
Arlene's Flower
Level: Simple
Creator: John Blackman
Teacher: John Blackman
Description:
This simple flower requires an inside reverse fold. Never done an inside reverse fold? This is your chance to advance your skills and learn this fold. We will also make leaves if time allows. A small piece of wire is used to hold the pieces together. Materials will be provided for the class.
Zebras
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Madiyar Amerkeshev
Teacher: Daniel Scher
Description:
Most origami zebras are complex models, but this pair of zebras is far simpler. The folding sequence is straightforward and relatively short. Miraculously, the final result captures all of the details you'd expect in a zebra. Better yet, the two zebras shown in the picture are really one and the same, with just a single step required to change the zebra from one pose to the other.
Phantasma Fractal
Level: Supercomplex
Creator: Edward Mistretta
Teacher: Edward Mistretta
Description:
This is a fractal model I designed. There are three variations of it, all of which will be be shown in the class. During the class, we will shoot for at least three stages. However, this model can keep having stages added to it as long as the paper permits.
Special Requirements: This model is classified as "supercomplex" because it contains a folding sequence made up of a plethora of varied sinks. Hence, a mastery of sinks, unsinks, and spread sinks is required. The students going to this class should know how to fold with absolute precision. Prior experience to making origami fractals and understanding fractal patterns is suggested. The paper suggested for this model would be a sturdy, medium thick square (70-110 gsm). The size of the square should be at least 8+ inches. Paper will be provided.
Head
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Stuart Roberts
Teacher: David Harmon
Description:
This is a three-dimensional model of a human head made from a 2x3 rectangle that is divided into 24 x 36 squares. I will supply everyone with a piece of paper with those squares already folded. While I have the original diagrams of the model, I modified the way I fold it to allow a much much easier final assembly of the model.
Saar Star
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Endla Saar
Teacher: Cindy Reynaud
Description:
Beautiful Saar Stars frequently grace the Holiday Origami Tree at the AMNH. We'll start with the 5-pointed star and if time permits learn the 4-pointed original version as well. Students should be familiar with open sinks and petal folds. Accurate and crisp folding is necessary for best results. The 5-pointed star is folded from a pentagon, the 4-pointed star from a square.
Special Requirements: Scissors are needed to cut pentagons. Familiarity with open sinks and petal folds would be helpful. Bring paper from your survival kit to make initial practice stars. Foil will be provided to make final models.
House Box by Ayako Kawate
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Ayako Kawate
Teacher: Ellen Aronson
Description:
This two part box has a pitched "roof" lid and a rectangular shaped bottom. It is made with two squares of paper, with the lid slightly larger than the bottom to accommodate good closure. Paper will be provided for both parts.
Special Requirements: This class requires precise folding. The roof includes an interesting maneuver which elevates the level to just above basic Intermediate. A straight edge would be helpful to delineate the crease lines of four diamond shapes that form the roof. Paper will be provided for the class.
Napkin Water Lily
Level: Simple
Creator: Traditional
Teacher: Erim Akpan
Description:
Ever wondered how restaurants fold napkins into artwork? In this class, we'll learn how to make a simple but very beautiful water lily from a paper napkin. We use blintz folds and a little bit of creative tugging to make the lily take shape. This model is great for beginners, even if you've never made origami before.
Special Requirements: Napkins and colored markers will be provided for the class.
Dragon
Level: High Intermediate
Creator: Jeremy Shaffer
Teacher: Guru Seenivasan

Polygonal Medallion-Spirals
Level: Intermediate
Creator: Takaya Iwamoto
Teacher: Takaya Iwamoto
Description:
If we start with a piece of paper cut in any regular polygonal shape and apply symmetric folding, the result will show surprisingly interesting patterns. I named this new paper folding pastime Polygonal Medallion. In this class polygons with a spiraling pattern will be presented. To create spiraling behavior, each unit is drawn with the same reduction scale factor. We use a 7 unit reduction scale factor for the hexagon. Hands-on experience will help students to understand this idea using pre-cut printed papers to make medallion-like objects. Students are required to do precise scoring along the diagram lines and then fold along the pre-creased lines.
Special Requirements: Please bring a ruler for scoring. Precut printed papers and ball point pens (red & blue) will be provided.
Easy Flasher Hat
Level: Complex
Creator: Jeremy Shafer
Teacher: Yuriy Slabicky

Learn to fold Jeremy Shafer's Easy Flasher Hat! Don't let the name fool you, however; the model isn't a walk in the park! When folded from a 2-foot square as a starting point, the form-fitting hat is 5" tall, with about 4-5" of brim sticking out of your head. It also happens to collapse into an easily-transported cylinder! Afterwards, you can wet the model and it'll spring closed on its own! Be prepared for hat puns, however...
Special Requirements: I will provide a pre-folded grid of paper for people in the class, but if you want, you can bring your own. A 27x27 or 31x31 grid is recommended, folded from heavier paper if possible (the squares I will bring are made from craft paper). Familiarity with the flasher family of models is preferred but not required.

Floral Medallion

In order to accommodate the individual characteristics of a flower, the photo to be used as the basis for folding requires some preparation, which will be explained briefly for each model. Attendees have the opportunity to understand this idea through hands-on experience, using pre-cut printed papers to create the medallion-like objects. They will need to do precise scoring along the diagram lines and then apply a simple twist folding process.
Special Requirements: Bring a ruler for scoring. Ball point pens for scoring will be provided. Precut printed papers will also be provided for this session.
