An educational software company I once worked for used to promote a Leadership Framework that was illustrated using an Escher-like ring of adjoining geometric shapes. The center of the ring lists the four core values of a good leader; around them in dark blue are displayed attributes of good leadership; and around those in light blue are their "non-leadership" equivalents. When I saw this I immediately was reminded of the book "M.C. Escher Kaleidocycles" by Doris Schattschneider and Wallace Walker, which takes Escher's beautiful repeating images and turns them into 3-dimensional rotating paper sculptures. I created an origami version of the Leadership Framework that flexes completely around. It's made from a strip of paper printed on one side. For the class, I will provide trimmed Leadership Framework paper strips, ready for folding. Tape will be provided to complete the assembly.

These models range from very low intermediate to considerably more challenging, making this workshop ideal both for those unfamiliar with modular origami and those with a firm foundation who want to learn more. Several models will be shown, and students will choose which one(s) they want to learn. Different students may end up learning different models (which is why this is called a "workshop"), and the teacher acts as a facilitator, ensuring that everyone is successful. Those expecting the teacher to stand in front and teach one model step by step will be disappointed and are encouraged to choose another class.

We'll be folding an origami dragon of high-intermediate complexity (perhaps shading a bit more towards the complex side). All fold angles are multiples of 22.5 degrees and relatively few folds are more than 2-ply. This makes it easier to retain accuracy and fold from a small square. The long limbs also make a variety of poses possible. Time permitting, I’d like to show how the projection or 'crossing diagonals' method can be applied to designs formed by tiling bases, such as this one. It is a very intuitive technique which almost instantly made me a more capable designer upon learning it, so I am excited to pass it along!

Most origami modular rings are formed from units folded from squares. In this class, we explore several of the many simple but elegant rings that can be easily assembled with tightly-locked units folded from equilateral triangles. After learning how to fold and one-cut an equilateral triangle shape from a square, you will learn how to make several modular rings and be given general guidance on how to make many more on your own. Some models will be folded from 6 units, some from 12.

Classic Herman Lau flower-in-a-pot from a single dollar bill. This is by far my favorite bill fold to leave as a gift or a tip. I've never had anyone wish to take it apart and spend it, once given. Mr. Lau went out of his way to help me teach it to his specifications when I requested to teach it at my first OrigamiUSA convention. There aren't any official diagrams released and he said people were getting the proportions wrong. So he insured that I taught it the way he designed the model.

This envelope gets my vote as (by far!) the best origami envelope ever devised. Simple and practical, it makes good use of the paper. It is scalable, giftable. I will provide free paper in various sizes (to fit dollar bills, checks, or gift cards). It's a great envelope for organizing crease patterns, cut paper, etc..

Special Requirements: While I think this envelope is pretty simple, it is low intermediate (due to a few folds that may be confusing to beginners). Fellow students should be able to help less gifted folders. Since this model is reasonably simple, I am hoping to be done in less than 45 minutes, in which case I will fill in the remaining time by showing how to fold a pixel unit (for modular origami).

Special Requirements: Students should be comfortable with folding and assembling modular models. Assembly is relatively simple, but, as with most modular models, precise folding is crucial. Note that students will be using each modular piece as a template for each subsequent piece they fold.
