Introduction to Papermaking

This class will be a demonstration of hand-papermaking techniques, starting from raw plants, using materials and tools easily found at home. Explanations and demonstrations will be given for preparing plant fiber and students will be able to make their own sheets using pre-prepared white mulberry pulp. Students can either take their wet sheets (and the blotting paper they dry on) or wait for them to dry and collect their sheets in the afternoon at a location to be announced by the teacher.

Special Requirements: Students who intend to make their own paper should be prepared to get a little wet! Hand towels will be provided for drying off afterwards. If you would like to attend without making paper, that's fine as well. In that case, feel free to just show up. For those making paper, you can either keep your wet sheet (and the blotting paper it drys on) or wait for it to dry and collect it once afternoon classes finish. If you need special arrangements, let me know in class and we can figure things out. Special materials provided include: mulberry pulp, blotting paper, basin for containing water/pulp, mold and deckle for making sheets of paper.

Gleaner's Joy-Finding a Jewel

Level: Not Rated

Teacher: Takaya Iwamoto

Description:
There are many ways to create star-like objects and they are widely published. For a latecomer like myself who jumped into this field only a few years ago, it is a daunting task to explore this well trodden origami field in order to search for something that slipped through the fingers of our forerunners. This is the story of my personal experience as a humble gleaner (definition: someone who picks up grain left in the field by harvesters) who has some limited success in such efforts. I will cover: (1) How to use CAD effectively in the search efforts; (2) Examples of "what-if" scenarios and their outcomes; (3) Discussions about general CAD usage.

In this class, two rosettes will be folded from the same size paper, glued back to back, and made into an ornament.

Special Requirements: This model requires folding the paper into 16ths. I will teach the technique but it would be best if you already know how to do that. Materials will be provided for the class. Diagrams for the Rosette are in Classic Origami by Paul Jackson.
