Eiffel Star

This clever modular takes a patterned paper, repeated 12 times, and makes it look like a kaleidoscope. The module is not difficult to fold and the construction is not too hard either --- assuming you are willing to pay close attention to the orientation of the paper and fold reasonably carefully! It's a good chance to try this modular model even if you have never tried one before. Bonus: If made from 7.5 cm (3 inch) paper, the star will fit perfectly into a Fuse hexagon box (see my other class) made from 15 cm (6 inch) paper, making a beautiful false bottom.

Learn several crane variations: Fold the Korean alternative to the traditional crane, make a traditional crane wings flap with sinks, add many wings to the traditional crane and fold my crane nest. It would be good to know how to fold a bird base. If you are unfamiliar with the bird base, Lisa will teach the bird base.

This is a 3D model that is best wet-folded but can be folded with nice foil or even kami. Photos show examples from all three types of paper. It contains several complex sinks, both open and closed, so do not let its relatively simple appearance fool you if you're not ready for complex sinks!

Brooms Up! Here we fold the model of Quidditch Seeker who just caught the Golden Snitch and earned 150 points for his team =) Of course, this work inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter classic novels. Harry as Seeker of Gryffindor Team was the prototype. And what’s your favorite Quiddich Team and Seeker? What’s your House at Hogwarts? If you are a fan of Origami and the Wizarding world of Harry Potter, this class is for you. Join, and let the OriMagic begin!

Here we fold a double-colored Bookmark in Kazakh style, plated with symbolic trident - key element of national ornament. Being a quite simple geometric form, this element gives origin to plenty of more complicated ornamental motifs known as "örken" - 'sprout', "qoshqar müyiz" - 'ram horns', "qus qanat" - 'bird wings', "gülder", "güldenu" - 'flowers', 'prosperity', and many others which still are meaningful both in ancient Nomadic cultural code and in modern Kazakhstani decorative tradition.

Arsalan Wares

In this teaching session we will learn how to make a modular triangular origami box from 11 in by 8.5 in (US Letter) rectangular sheets. A4 (210 x 297 mm) paper will also be suitable for this box. We are making box lid from 3 sheets and box container from 3 sheets.

This teaching session will also highlight the link between origami and geometry. We will also derive a formula for the volume of the box mathematically.

Swirly Star (modular)

Level
Intermediate
Creator(s)
Matthew Green
Teacher(s)
Matthew Green

This is an 8-piece modular of intermediate difficulty; folding a unit includes squash folds, petal folds, swivel folds, and partially unfolding and refolding the unit to rearrange a layer. Precision is important for an aesthetic result, as the units are locked by lining up and folding flaps together. In the class, it is possible that not all students will fold all 8 units, depending on their speed, but with 3 units we can learn the lock and post-lock folds needed to complete the model independently.

Hexagon & Triangle Boxes

Tomoko Fuse
Teacher(s)
Charlene MORROW

I invite you to fold these two classic and clever Tomoko Fuse boxes with me! They have remained an inspiration to me since I started folding. I encourage you to try these models even if you are a relatively inexperienced folder and might consider them over your head. I will go slowly so that you can experience the satisfaction of making something that might be a stretch for you. I will also point out some mathematical connections as we fold, especially for teachers who might want to use these ideas with students.

OrigamiDraw Tips and Tricks

Level
High Intermediate
Teacher(s)
Akira Terao

There are many reasons to draw Crease Patterns (CPs): to keep a record of one’s own designs, to work out the structure of a new design, to search for folding sequences of a model,… Whatever your reason, if you work with CPs and you have an iPhone or an iPad, OrigamiDraw is the best tool you can get (and it is free). It is a portable tool to keep all your designs in one place, and to record new ones wherever you are, using familiar operations like segment and angle bisection, perpendicular and parallel lines, and all the traditional bases.

Larry Hart Gem & Wind Turbine

This model is also known as the "Snap Hexahedron". It is an action model with a high "ooh!" factor. It was created by Larry Hart, a longtime member of the BOS, who passed from Covid-19 a few months ago, and I am offering this in his memory. It is one of my favorite models. I learned it in the 1980s from Verdi Adams, who called it the "Oh! Fold". I will be teaching from diagrams by Hans Dybkjær that Larry considered crucial to a full appreciation of this model.
