Notes on Diagramming
From the editor: Arnold sends me step folds on which I base my diagrams. When I sat down to diagram this brooch, I looked over his examples and noted that, except for the last steps, the creases seemed identical to those for Brooch 6 From a Regular Pentagon. So, I thought my job would be easy: just copy the first three pages, change the color, and finish with a new final page. I was wrong. The difference between the two models comes down to the location of a single fold, in step 9, and everything from there is slightly altered.
The single tighter fold yields a flattened base and less pleating around the edge. I am awestruck that so small a change can lead to so substantial a difference.
Inspiration
Arnold is one of many designers who admires Philip Shen. He notes, “The precreasing and pleating sequence in steps 16-20 were again inspired by the works of the late Philip Shen.”
